Shibori

Traditional Japanese fabric dyeing technique

Shibori

Shibori is an ancient Japanese technique of hand-dyeing fabric, creating unique patterns with soft color transitions. Its essence lies in mechanically restricting the access of dye to certain areas of the material: the fabric is twisted, pulled with threads, tied in knots, stitched, or even pressed with wooden planks. Each method yields a characteristic pattern.

Particularly impressive are effects resembling clouds, waves, or botanical motifs. In Japanese culture, shibori was traditionally used in the making of kimono, with masters passing down secrets through generations. Contemporary designers have turned to this technique anew because of its eco-friendliness and individuality — it is impossible to replicate the same pattern twice, and that is precisely the magic of shibori.
