Etching with watercolor. First quarter of the 19th century. The same as the one from the collection of the Museum of the Patriotic War of 1812 in Moscow.
The drawing titled "Tableau général de la Cavalerie Russe" depicts the Russian cavalry, including irregular troops, on the march.
G. Mansfeld, K. Rahl after the original by W. Kobel. Russian Cavalry. 1809.
A general accompanied by staff officers, trumpeters, dragoons, hussars, and horse artillery has arrived to inspect the irregular cavalry. On the right, Ural Cossacks are shown, with Bashkirs, Kalmyks, and a female market vendor in the foreground. Although the engraving is unsigned, a search for analogues in other museum collections, including foreign ones, helped to identify the name of the original artist. He turned out to be the German artist Wilhelm von Kobel, who worked for a Viennese publishing house from 1805 to 1813. Among the numerous works by this draftsman depicting French cavalry, Prussian infantry, Prussian hussars, and grenadiers, two sheets were dedicated to Russian cavalry. The engravings of Kobel's drawings were transferred by German artists Karl Rahl (K.-H. Pahl) and Heinrich Mansfeld (Mansfeld).
In the State Historical Museum, among the graphic sheets dedicated to the events of the 1812 era, a special place is given to images of irregular forces that participated in the Patriotic War of 1812 and the foreign campaigns of 1813–1814. Engravings depicting Cossacks, Kalmyks, Tatars, Bashkirs, and other ethnicities of the Russian Empire are preserved in the collections of well-known collectors from the early 20th century – P.I. Shchukin, I.Kh. Kolodeev, A.P. Bakhrushin, P.Ya. Dashkov – and number more than a hundred items. These include genre and battle scenes, views of cities, and depictions of representatives of the irregular Russian army.
