Portrait Vase of Emperor Franz I of Austria. Vienna Porcelain Manufacture, 1835. Oval shape, with side handles in the form of snails, featuring a polychrome waist-length portrait of Kaiser Franz I. Signed by the miniaturist Claudius Herr and dated 1834. (The last lifetime portrait of the emperor!) Below the portrait is the inscription "Franz I Emperor of Austria." On the reverse side of the vase is the imperial eagle with gold engraving. On the pedestal of the vase, there is an inscription: "Sign of respect from Chevalier Frasa. Gerstner." Polychrome painting, rich gold decorations, with a mark from the imperial porcelain factory at the bottom. This vase is listed in the Vienna Museum catalog on page 38. Size: 30 cm.

This vase was commissioned by: Franz Anton Ritter von Gerstner (19 April 1796, Prague – 12 April 1840, Philadelphia) – an Austrian and Czech engineer, who built the first railroads in the Czech Republic, Austria, and Russia (1834-1837).

By: Johann Claudius Herr (1775 – after 1838), alternatively written as Claudius Heer, was an Austrian miniaturist. He was well-known as an outstanding and foremost artist of the Vienna Porcelain Manufacture.

It was a gift for his emperor in 1834, related to his departure to Russia (1834-1837) to construct the first railway in Russia.

Franz I Habsburg (12 February 1768, Florence – 2 March 1835, Vienna), under the name Franz II was the last emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and under the name Franz I – the first emperor of Austria, King of Bohemia, Hungary, Croatia, Dalmatia, Jerusalem, Prince of Transylvania, Grand Duke of Tuscany, Duke of Lorraine, Katyn, Lower Silesia, Margrave of Moravia, Count of Tyrol, Gorizia, Gradisca, Illyria, etc. He was the son of Emperor Leopold II and Maria Ludovika, daughter of King Charles III of Spain.

Gerstner arrived in Russia in August 1834 upon the invitation of the Chief of Staff of the Corps of Mining Engineers, K. V. Chevkin. After a long analysis and data collection in the territory...He returned to Moscow in early 1835. Gerstner presented his vision for the construction of railways in a memorandum to Emperor Nicholas I. He planned to lay a railway between Saint Petersburg and Moscow, and then connect Moscow with Kazan and Nizhny Novgorod. The tracks were to extend south all the way to Odessa.

In January 1835, Gerstner was received by Emperor Nicholas I, who listened to his proposals for building the railway. The emperor's decree to construct the Tsarskoye Selo railway was announced on April 15, 1836. The construction was financed by a private joint-stock company, with Count Bobrinsky as the main shareholder. The official opening of the Tsarskoye Selo railway took place on October 30, 1837.

Emperor of Austria." On the reverse, a gold-etched imperial eagle. On the base, it is inscribed "A token of esteem from Chevalier Fras. Gerstner." Polychrome painting. Rich gold decoration.
