Adolf Ladyurner (1789-1855) was born into the family of the composer and pianist Ignatius Ladyurner, a native of Tyrol. He studied painting with Horace Vernet and then lived and worked in Paris, creating works in the field of battle painting (parades, scenes of military actions). He exhibited twice at the Salon (in 1824 with the painting "The Battle of Mataro" and in 1827 with "The Headquarters of the Royal Uhlans"). In 1830, he moved to Saint Petersburg, where he soon gained the favor of Emperor Nicholas I and created images for him of military parades, deployments, camp scenes, uniform designs of various parts of the Russian army, and more. In 1836, the Imperial Academy of Arts recognized him as an academician for several works presented to them, and in 1840 he was elevated to the rank of professor. He died in Saint Petersburg in 1855. Numerous works by Ladyurner were scattered, mainly in imperial palaces; among them, the most complex and interesting is "The Triumph of the Opening of the Alexander Column" (located in the Hermitage). He passed away in Saint Petersburg on June 2 (14), 1855, "from paralytic exhaustion of the spinal cord". He was buried in the Smolensk Lutheran Cemetery (plot 4, granite stele on a pedestal, the grave is destroyed).
