Description

Collection of Silver Medals "Great Grand Dukes, Tsars, and Emperors of Russia"
"Portrait, Historical Collection" - medals featuring images of Grand Dukes, Tsars, Empresses, and Emperors of Russia from 862 to 1894 - one of the most significant ideological projects of Empress Catherine II in the field of medal making.
The emergence of this portrait series of medals was linked to the Empress's interest in domestic history and the art of medal engraving. Between 1768 and 1774, a series of fifty-nine round medals was created featuring portraits of Russian princes and tsars (according to V.P. Smirnov's catalog - 58 items, with item 12 containing two medals) - from Rurik to Peter III. The foundation for their creation was the "Brief Russian Chronicle" by M.V. Lomonosov and a series of portraits of Russian princes and tsars carved by I. Dorsh on green jasper.
The obverse side of each medal displays a bust portrait of the prince or tsar with a circular inscription containing his name and title. The reverse side features an inscription from the "Brief Russian Chronicle," indicating how the grand ducal or royal throne was inherited, along with a listing of the main events and achievements of the ruler.
Overall, this portrait series of medals served as a sort of visual aid, demonstrating the core idea of M.V. Lomonosov's work regarding the advantages of autocratic rule for Russia, which he viewed as the guarantee of the "bliss" and "prosperity" of the Fatherland.
In the 19th century, six more medals depicting reigning monarchs from Catherine II to Alexander III were added to the portrait series.
In 2007-2008, the Saint Petersburg Mint of Goznak resumed the minting of medals from the portrait series using the preserved historical tools. The collection was supplemented with medals depicting Ivan VI and Nicholas II, which were missing from the historical series. As a result, the total number of medals in the collection amounts to 67 pieces.
