Collection of Silver Medals “Grand Dukes, Tsars, and Emperors of Russia”
“Portrait and Historical Collection” - medals featuring the images of Grand Dukes, Tsars, Empresses, and Emperors of Russia from 862 to 1894 are one of the most significant ideological initiatives of Empress Catherine II in the field of medal making.
The appearance of the portrait series of medals was linked to the Empress's interest in national history and medallic art. Between 1768 and 1774, a series of fifty-nine round medals depicting Russian princes and tsars was created under her patronage (according to V.P. Smirnov’s catalog - 58 items, with number 12 containing two medals) - from Rurik to Peter III. The basis for this creation was M.V. Lomonosov's "Brief Russian Chronicle" and a series of portraits of Russian princes and tsars carved by I. Dorsch on green jade.
On the obverse of each medal is a bust portrait of the prince or tsar with a circular inscription containing their name and title. On the reverse side, there is an inscription from the "Brief Russian Chronicle" indicating how the grand princely or royal throne was inherited, along with a list of the ruler's main events and achievements.
Overall, the portrait series of medals served as a unique visual aid and demonstrated the central idea of M.V. Lomonosov's work concerning the advantages of autocratic rule for Russia, which he saw as the guarantee of the "bliss" and "prosperity" of the Fatherland.
In the 19th century, six more medals depicting reigning individuals from Catherine II to Alexander III were added to the portrait series.
In 2007-2008, the Saint Petersburg Mint of Goznak resumed minting medals of the portrait series based on preserved historical tools. The collection was supplemented with the previously missing medals depicting Ivan VI and Nicholas II. Thus, the total number of medals in the collection amounts to 67 pieces.
