The collection of silver medals "Great Princes, Kings, and Emperors of Russia" consists of 67 pieces. It was produced by the Saint Petersburg Mint of the Goznak, featuring a portrait series based on the preserved historical tools (dies).

The "Portrait and Historical Collection" consists of medals featuring images of Great Princes, Kings, Empresses, and Emperors of Russia from 862 to 1894 - one of the most significant ideological projects of Empress Catherine II in medal design.

The emergence of this portrait series of medals was linked to the Empress's interest in domestic history and the art of medal making. Between 1768 and 1774, a series of fifty-nine round medals was created featuring the portraits of Russian princes and kings (according to V.P. Smirnov's catalog - 58 items, with two medals listed under number 12) - from Rurik to Peter III. The foundation for this series was based on "A Brief Russian Chronicle" by M.V. Lomonosov and a series of portraits of Russian princes and kings carved by I. Dorsh on green jasper.

On the obverse side of each medal is a bust portrait of a prince or king, accompanied by a circular inscription containing their name and title. The reverse side features an excerpt from "A Brief Russian Chronicle," indicating how the Grand Ducal or Royal throne was inherited, along with a listing of the main events and achievements of the ruler.

Overall, the portrait series of medals served as a unique visual aid and demonstrated the central idea of M.V. Lomonosov's work regarding the advantages of autocratic rule for Russia, which he saw as the key to the "bliss" and "prosperity" of the Fatherland.

In the 19th century, six additional medals portraying reigning figures from Catherine II to Alexander III were added to the portrait series.

In 2007-2008, the St. Petersburg Mint of Goznak resumed the minting of medals from the portrait series based on the preserved historical tools. The collection was supplemented with the missing medals depicting John VI and Nicholas II. As a result, the total number of medals in the collection amounts to 67.
